How To Think Like A PR Pro

MPRC 2014 Annual Conference

The Maine Public Relations Council’s annual meeting, held October 23 at the University of Southern Maine, promised How to be Your Own Ringmaster. And MPRC showed how it’s done, asking attendees the day before to join the conversation at #MPRCircus.

The event kicked off with high wire acts by circus performers and a keynote by Peter Nielsen of the Circus Conservatory, which is coming to Portland in 2015. His message: put the story at the center and make sure your relationship to it is authentic. In other words, think like a ringmaster.

Morning breakout sessions included award-winning playwright and guest lecturer Liz Peavey, who gave practical tips on presenting and pitching, and Social Media Breakfast Maine founder Amanda O’Brien, who provided valuable insights into juggling the fast paced world of social media – from the fundamentals to useful tools.

In the afternoon Bently Collins of Sabre Yachts introduced a new $3 million boat – and in a bit of smart interactivity, asked the audience for suggestions on how to promote it. Laurie Brooks of L.L. Bean reported on Bean’s highly successful 100th anniversary Million Moments social media initiative.

The day ended with Speed Pitching with #Nofilter – a PR take on Shark Tank. Top Maine journalists heard pitches from the audience and gave no-holds-barred feedback
